Gay & Lesbian – The South African parliament on Tuesday approved new legislation recognizing gay marriages _ a first for a continent where homosexuality is largely taboo.The National Assembly passed the Civil Union Bill, worked out after months of heated public discussion, by a majority of 230 to 41 votes despite criticism from both traditionalists and gay activists and warnings that it might be unconsitutional. There were three abstentions.

Movies – Yesterday we told you about the big new out of Los Angeles: The Los Angeles Archdiocese announced the payout of $60 million in reparations to 45 victims of clergy sexual abuse. Cardinal Roger Mahony, who heads the Archdiocese, was prominently featured in the Oscar short-listed documentary Deliver Us from Evil, for his alleged role in moving pedophile priest Father Oliver O'Grady from parish to parish, where he preyed on hundreds of young victims.

Books – Judith Regan, the firebrand editor who stirred up decade-old passions last month with her plans for a book and television interview with O. J. Simpson, was fired late Friday by HarperCollins, the publishing company that oversaw her book business. HarperCollins announced the dismissal, "effective immediately," in a two-sentence news release that was issued at about 7 p.m. Eastern time. The announcement was made by Jane Friedman, president and chief executive of HarperCollins, who has long had a strained relationship with Ms. Regan.

Movies – A documentary film dealing with the atrocities of the Khmer Rouge regime is opening in Cambodia. The film, Waiting To See The Truth, includes interviews with Cambodians who describe the forced labour, starvation and mass killings under Pol Pot's rule.But it also shows footage of young Cambodians who do not believe stories of the atrocities of the late 1970s.
