What If Obama Loses?

Politics – What happens if Barack Obama loses the presidential election in November? I know that the very idea is as ridiculous as thinking that the New England Patriots could lose the Super Bowl after 19 straight victories, but what if? Exactly what would such a scenario mean?

We Can Do It

Politics – Despite the right wing naysayers who would drag us down, now is the moment for exactly the kind of challenge Mr. Gore issued in his speech. It doesn't matter if his proposal is less than perfect, or can't be realized within 10 years, or even it if is found to be deeply flawed. The goal is the thing.

It's the Economic Stupidity, Stupid

Politics – By his own admission, simple math and economics have never been McCain's forte. Indeed, McCain's self-contradictory, flip-flopping economic pronouncements are just plain old incoherence, as if he were compulsively consulting one of those old Magic 8 Balls.

George W. Bush Sewage Treatment Plant renaming qualifies for November ballot.

Politics – The Presidential Memorial Commission of San Francisco has just recently submitted signatures to city election officials "hoping to place on the ballot an initiative that would rechristen the Oceanside Water Pollution Control Plant as the George W. Bush Sewage Plant."

Nazi Jews: A Historical Paradox

Books – Would it surprise anyone to learn that there were upwards of 150, 000 soldiers of partial Jewish descent serving in the Nazi army during World War II?

Good Riddance to Tony Snow

Politics – Some reading this may think it inappropriate to "kick the man" when he's just passed on. I say it's wholly appropriate considering what he did. This man did not serve the country; he served Bush and Bush alone.

The Real-Life '24' of Summer 2008

Politics – We've returned to summer of 2001. We're again distracted and unprepared while the Taliban and bin Laden's minions multiply in Afghanistan and Pakistan. This is the Bush administration's legacy that not only rationalizes the immorality of torture, but has shackled our national security as well.

The Death of Reaganomics

Money – Since the Reagan years, free-market cliches have passed for sophisticated economic analysis. But in the current crisis, these ideas are falling, one by one, as even conservatives recognize that capitalism is ailing.

Here's A Little Straight Talk, My Friends. John McCain Hates Social Security.

Politics – McCain's main problem in trying to explain his shifting stances on Social Security is that while he hates the program and would privatize it, he's worried about losing the senior vote. If he gave seniors a little "Straight Talk," he'd lose their vote, but at least he and seniors could still be friends.

Go to Helms, Regressives

Politics – Regardless of how those on the regressive right want to sanitize the life of Jesse Helms, the truth is he was one racist SOB who stood as an obstacle for everything decent, and everything the right has proved to be wrong about.

Ben Bernanke: Socialist

Money – So, Ben, what is the exact definition of "unusual and exigent circumstances"? When exactly are these over and who decides? Again -- we are now getting into a really gray area for which there is no answer. But, again, I can tell you what this looks like: Privatize the profits and socialize the losses.
