Tom Drapeau is the Director of Propeller social news. Although it is the job he always dreamed he'd have, he's had a pretty good time for the last decade, writing code and building sites for Barnes & Noble, Online Retail Partners, Yahoo!, and Ask Jeeves. Tom is an excellent speller, having taken first place in his second grade spelling bee, and hates wearing ties. Tom's Email: tom at propeller dot com

Lego Secret Vault Contains All Sets in History

Gadgets & Tech – Visiting Lego's Memory Lane--the secret vault guarding almost every Lego set ever manufactured--touched me in a way I didn't expect. It wasn't just the impressive view of the 4,720 Lego sets. These were tickets to ride a time portal to emotions and simpler days long forgotten.

Performance Problems on Propeller.com

Gadgets & Tech – I wanted to apologize for the poor stretches in performance on Propeller.com that our loyal members have had to endure over the past months. I have seen a number of members mention bad performance when submitting stories, comments, etc in comment threads for other stories, and I wanted to mention that we are grateful for the feedback, and...

Why Yahoo! Buzz is a Brilliant Idea

Gadgets & Tech – As soon as the online press got hold of a sliver of information about Yahoo! Buzz, the predictable cries of "Digg clone!" were loud enough to drown out anyone who thought that Yahoo! Buzz might be something more than a lame attempt at socially driven news (without the social elements).

Wedmore, England asks to be removed from the map

News – This little village would seem to be an obviously poor place through which to drive your average large truck. It is in an obscure, rural location. Its streets were built in the days of horses and carts. There is no room to pass and no room to maneuver. Some residents are trying to have their village removed from the navigation devices used...

Private School Education at No Cost?

Money – Consider Phillips Exeter Academy, John F. Kennedy Jr.'s alma mater, in Exeter, N.H. Your child would have 450 courses in 19 subjects to choose from and the opportunity to participate in special programs, such as interning for prominent politicians. And your child could receive that exclusive private education free. That's right -- completely free.

Google as a Password Cracker?

Gadgets & Tech – While doing forensics, I thought it would be interesting to find out the account password. Wordpress stores raw MD5 hashes in the user database (despite my recommendation to use salting). As with any respectable hash function, it is believed to be computationally infeasible to discover the input of MD5 from an output.

Adventures in Fitness: Irish Step Dancing

Health & Fitness – You may ask, "Is Irish dancing exercise?" In an article in Irish Dance magazine, there was a teenage girl, Alexandra Hahn, who is an Irish dancer and her friends insisted that her dancing didn't take as much effort as other "sports." Fed up, she decided to find out...

Health & Fitness – Why is exercise easier when you're a kid? When I was in grade school, I was in great shape: no cellulite, no love handles and no unsightly sags.

Nashoba Publishing Online - Adventures in Fitness: Hiking

Health & Fitness – If you are looking for a great workout, and something you can do with friends and family, try hiking. It really is terrific exercise. For ideas on where to hike in Massachusetts, visit www.localhikes.com and put in your ZIP code. Oak Hill is great for families, but also try the Pine Meadow conservation area in Ayer, Oxbow National Wildlife Refuge in Bolton, the Tower Hill Botanic Garden in Boylston, Wachusett Reservoir in Clinton, Mirror Lake on Devens, or Groton Place in Groton.

Adventures in Fitness: Harvard Therapeutic Massage

Health & Fitness – I came across an Internet magazine titled "Inspired, Informed and In Shape" written by Jon Gestl, a personal trainer and U.S. national aerobic champion. Gestl writes that massage improves circulation and general nutrition of muscles, while also improving flexibility and range of motion and decreasing injuries often caused by overtraining.
