Travel – Paul Harris in America's love affair fades as the car becomes burden of suburbia (Observer, Guardian UK, July 6th) paints a rather bleak picture of the future of America's landscape as it is now. He states that "as Americans enjoyed the 4 July holiday weekend, increasing numbers of them were staying at home rather than hitting the road".

Food – How much worse can things get when 'French are forced to shell out more for snails' reports Angelique Chrisafis for The Guardian. She says that "Snails, France's national delicacy, are the latest menu item to panic consumers after the industry warned a shortfall in the 2008 harvest would send prices soaring".

Careers & Jobs – You might have read with interest as I did 'I Freed Myself From E-Mail's Grip' (NY Times, June 29). I did not know its author Luis Suarez until then. He confirms his Declaration of Independence from E-Mail via his blog ELSUA on July 4th. He addresses head on the skepticism that greeted his strategic changes.

Food – This Quarterback did not score a touchdown with me. It did not knock my socks off. Does not mean it has no qualities. Being good sometimes is good enough. Unlike a quatre-quarts, one of my favorite cake to bake when you are in a hurry, this Quarterback (2006) from McLaren Vale is unequal parts Shiraz, Cab, Merlot, Grenache.

Movies – Could not make it to opening night of Japan Cuts, July 2nd in New York so I set my fishing net wide in search of what's on the program. In 'Japan Cuts Above The Rest' Peter Gutierrez picks favorites such as United Red Army a docudrama on the leftist group, Dainipponjin which he describes as "a mockumentary about "Big Man Japan"...

Music – I had the pleasure to see Al Dimeola, the ever friendly guitar player (not sure he got a seat on guitar hero) a day before he left for the European leg of the Return to Forevever reunion tour. He had a couple pictures he took recently om his I Phone. I was surprised to see how changed Chick Corea was...

News – While picking up a few things at Whole Foods, I noticed a new magazine on the racks, Green Guide. I did not buy a copy. I did like the cover story, 'Green on a Budget' (with matches my Consumed to Thrifty thread) so I checked Green Guide online and realized that it was published by National Geographic.

Careers & Jobs – That's the first thought that came to mind, a few weeks back when I wrote not one but two letters. One was to my mother who is computer less and the other to one of my cousins who recently lost her mother. Using pen and paper made me realize how few letters I have written and mailed in the past few years. Even a post card might be nice.

Food – Lynne Char Bennett notes that most of the Rose found in the U.S is imported and reminds us that Rose is made with juice from red and black grapes that has had minimal contact with the dark grape skins, which contribute color and a small amount of tannins to the wine". SF Chronicle Panel tasted 93 Rose wines this year.

News – Carolyn Lochhead wonders "could strawberry ice cream disappear from our lives? What about vanilla Swiss almond?" in 'Un-busy bees a disaster for almost everyone' (SF Gate, June 27). She says that the people at Haagen-Dazs and other companies are alarmed at the "decline of honeybees and other pollinators...".

Food – His Muscadet might be more popular but it is no reason to neglect Serge Batard Domaine Les Hautes Noelles Gamay. I just bought a bottle of the 2007 Vintage (100% Gamay grapes) and it was perfect for hot muggy weather. Serge Batard calls it a 'vin de la soif' (a wine for thirsty people) displaying red fruits and black cherries.

Food – How much garbage all our summer parties and picnics generate, god only knows? A little company that could, VerTerra (from New York) has come up with a solution inspired by India. They offer a line of plates, bowls, cups, and platters that they describe as "100% renewable, compostable plant matter and water".
