I grew up in Washington, DC and moved to California for College where I went to the Academy of Art in San Francisco. Then I moved to Florence, Italy where I have lived since 1992. The art of Florence has captivated me and made it easy to make such a huge cultural transition. I invite you to visit my website where you can see the profound influence my adopted city has had on me.

Art & Design – Some paintings are more involved than others. This painting, called "Waiting in Line at the Uffizi" took over seven months to complete, with about 500 hours of painting. It asks the viewer to take in a larger than life view of this famous scene, the Uffizi in Firenze, Italy. I call this 4th dimensional painting because you see all at once

Art & Design – Oil paint is an amazing versatile medium. It can be applied in a thick buttery fashion or thinned down to a watery consistency. This versatility opens the door to a number of different painting techniques.

Art & Design – I had a great time making this large still life. The label on the bottle was particularly difficult to render. I had to fill a graphic pen with diluted black oil paint to get the desired result. -Matthew Bates, Firenze, March 2007

Art & Design – This is one of my more detailed paintings. It's small size influenced the details, as they had to be extremely tight.
