Bush The Torturer, The Tyrant, The Disgrace

Politics – On Saturday, Mr. Bush vetoed a bill that would have outlawed the CIA's use of torture in interrogations (a bill, it should be noted, John McCain, alleged opponent of torture, voted against). Not good for this country, whose reputation today takes one more plunk toward the abyss of rogue and less than ordinary nations.

Obama-mania and Cult of Self-esteem

Politics – Obama has unleashed a wave of heady feelings of unity, purpose, and enthusiasm - but all for the man who makes them feel this way, not for any particular policies. No one, after all, is fainting at the thought of Obama's position on health insurance.

Stewie And Brian's TV Slam Song

Humor – The only reason I watch Family Guy is to catch a peek at what new thing Brian and Stewie are cooking up to make us laugh. They put this together for the Emmy's this year and it is absolutely perfect and true!

Dawkins Gets Angry Again

Religion – Your passionate conviction is called 'faith' and you have been taught, from infancy on, that to have faith is the supreme virtue. But what if your faith itself is wrong? It is wrong. Utterly, catastrophically, dreadfully wrong. If you die a 'martyr' for your God, you have died for nothing. If you kill for your God, you have killed for nothing.

Dark Matter Mystery Deepens in Cosmic "Train Wreck"

Science – NASA's Chandra X-ray Observatory and optical telescopes revealed a dark matter core that was mostly devoid of galaxies, which may pose problems for current theories of dark matter behavior. In addition to the dark matter core, a corresponding "light region" containing a group of galaxies with little or no dark matter was also detected.

Signs of Leno's Resentment at NBC Begin to Show

Television – On last night's The Tonight Show, Jay half-heartedly showed off a few set redecorations made while he was on vacation, including a new desk. Admitting he didn't see what was wrong with the old one, Leno quipped: "It's not like NBC to get rid of something that's worked perfectly well for 15 years."

Surprise: The rich get richer and the poor get more numerous

News – The gap between the state's rich and its poor is getting bigger. The bulk of job growth in California over the last generation took place at the top or bottom of the pay scale, a trend that has accelerated since the beginning of this decade. Jobs in the middle are scarcely growing at all.

The Bible And Christianity - The Historical Origins

Religion – To really understand the Bible and what it intends to say to present generations, it is necessary to understand who wrote it and why, and the cultural context in which it was written. And its very messiness is why it is a story rarely told in any completeness to Christian audiences. The overriding theme of the Bible stories is of cultural conquest.

Why the US Government Is Hated All Over the World

Do No Evil – Something is wrong with the United States. I think most of us have noticed it. There is a mortal rot in the country, made manifest by many little rots that are hard to integrate mentally yet are, I think, somehow related. The change is grave, accelerating, probably irreversible, and fascinating. Things are not as they were.
