Eliot

Eliot Phillips is a mechanical engineer who until recently was based in Nebraska. Growing up on a dairy farm he gained a strong mechanical aptitude; he dedicated time to more electronic pursuits as well. He is the lead hacker at Hack-A-Day and how-to editor emeritus for Engadget. Eliot stopped attempting to keep a regular sleep schedule years ago, finding it much more fun to go crawling through search results for new bizarre bits of knowledge. His personal blog is RobotSkirts.

Automated projector calibration (cooler than it sounds)

Gadgets & Tech – One of our readers sent in this awesome project. It automatically calibrates the projector to hit any surface perfectly in less than one minute. It works when the detector is facing away, through a mirror, you can even stitch to images together seamlessly, or map an image onto an arbitrarily placed 3D model.

THQ forging Warhammer 40K MMOG

Video Buell XB12R Firebolt dyno pull

Autos – My friend Jai invited me along today to witness his Buell XB12R's first run on the dynomometer. His bike has a straight pipe exhaust which makes the bike horrendously loud. Today's run also proved that it screws up the air/fuel ratio as well and that the O2 sensor is probably bad. The bike made 74.6Hp and now we know what problem areas to attack to pull that up.
