Are social news sites like Digg useful anymore?

Gadgets & Tech – You could argue that the Digg community is stronger than ever and that these are the stories that the community chooses to vote for and showcase on its famous front page. However, I'd argue that Digg is increasingly becoming a place to browse idly as you're about to glaze over at your work desk and you're desperate for a few seconds of distraction.

How will Twitter ever make money?

Gadgets & Tech – Why not just put a leaderboard banner ad across the top of the page and perhaps a skyscraper ad underneath each person's friends in the right column?

Gadgets threaten the Internet's future? Ridiculous

Gadgets & Tech – Yep, if it wasn't for all those Blackberries and blogs, the Internet might really be something, you know?

Creative destruction and the online video gold rush

Gadgets & Tech – If nothing else, the Internet is a powerful force that is still only beginning to shape our daily lives. We're only a few short years into widespread broadband cable distribution, which is driving the mad wild rush of video consumption.

Using smart content aggregation and smart people networks to beat back the over coverage plague

Gadgets & Tech – The global nature of the web coupled with a 24/7 publishing environment creates a never ending chase for page views and ad revenues. However, over coverage can be combated through a combination of smart content aggregators and smart people networks.

Twitter fever causing server meltdowns

Gadgets & Tech – Just as speculation was heating up that Twitter is considering abandoning its Ruby on Rails framework for PHP or Java, it hit another big service downtime snag this afternoon and into this evening.

Friendfeed versus Techmeme: can't they just get along?

Gadgets & Tech – I don't see Techmeme and Friendfeed as direct competitors. In fact, I see room for lots of aggregation services that find valuable and differentiated ways to provide information and help people to connect.

Good traffic, bad traffic, silly traffic, traffic traffic

Gadgets & Tech – How do you generate return visitors? The simple and not terribly magical answer is to write great content consistently, network with publishers and influential types who write similar kinds of content (and read and engage on their sites), and then hope to get linked.

Twitter and twhirl, Friendfeed and Alert Thingy

Gadgets & Tech – I binged out on thwirl and Alert Thingy this morning, desktop applications that send you alerts from people you're following on Twitter and Friendfeed... here are my findings.

Video Comments: 5 reasons they DO work

Gadgets & Tech – Video content and video feedback from the community will become an increasingly essential part of dialogue on the web. So in my view we might as well embrace the video commenting beast.

How do we decide who makes up the celebrity A List?

Celebrities – Take Steve Guttenberg as a random example. He was a big star in the '80s, with the Police Academy movies and a bunch of other high profile projects. Is he B List? C or D? What if there was a social media platform that focused on allowing its community to decide who is an A List celebrity?

Twitter, Friendfeed, and conversations versus information streams

Gadgets & Tech – While clearly both Twitter and Friendfeed can soak up a lot of your time and attention, they can be extremely valuable.

The shifting Shyftr debate

Gadgets & Tech – For where we are right now, Shyftr needs to stop publishing full text feeds. Doing that will place it back within a range where publisher rights are protected and user needs are being met.

Mashable has a lot of ads

Gadgets & Tech – I normally read Mashable, the uber-comprehensible news service of the social media world, through an RSS reader, so I was a little bit surprised when I browsed around the site last night. Is it just me, or does it have a lot of ads?
