Do-It-Yourself – I decided not to do a plain old "3 triangles and a mouth" this year and instead carved the very first "Scape-o-lantern."

Politics – Cindy Sheehan made a speech at a book signing in Palo Alto, claiming that she planted her uterus under a bush in Crawford, Texas. I'll refrain from making one of the hundreds of obvious jokes. (Audio recording of the claim is provided.)

Gadgets & Tech – "MediaCoder provides the ability to move video files from almost any format to almost any other format, and do so more elegantly than most of the commercial video conversion products I've tried." I've been looking for something like this for a loooooong time.

Pets – My wife and I bought one of those two-foot-long bones for Pedro, our border collie. Here is a video of him doing some tricks for it and then smacking into the walls as he carries it around.

Popular Videos – SNL does a hilarious send-up of the ever-expanding taco (*couch* gordita *cough*): "It's not a Taco Town taco until we roll it up in a blueberry pancake, dip it in batter, and deep-fry it until it's golden brown!"

Gadgets & Tech – If you use OPML to store your bookmarks, feeds, or blogroll, then this XSL stylesheet is worth checking out. It will transform an OPML file into a cleanly presented list of collapsable folders and links (rendered in HTML and usable in any major browser), and as a bonus, you can open all of a folder's links by double clicking on the folder name.

Art & Design – "Charlie Newbauer never subscribed to a newspaper. He found politics incomprehensible, current events dull. So when the war came, he was even more surprised than everybody else." This is the beginning of a beautifully written story being posted in parts at Jeff Harrell's blog, The Shape of Days - it's poetic but gripping.
