Over 300 miles north of the Arctic Circle, in the polar dark of a December morning, University of Manitoba Ph.D. student Jesse Carrie is out on the frozen Beaufort Sea, collecting ice samples to measure for mercury and pesticides. Lowered by crane from the deck of the icebreaking research vessel the CCGS Amundsen, and accompanied by a rifle bearer who keeps watch for polar bears, Carrie extracts ice cores and vials of frigid water.
Channel: News Tags: global warming arctic melting

Some people would just as soon ignore the culinary potential of the Carolina flying squirrel or the Waldoboro green neck rutabaga. To them, the creamy Hutterite soup bean is too obscure and the Tennessee fainting goat, which keels over when startled, sounds more like a sideshow act than the centerpiece of a barbecue.
Channel: News Tags: food shortage food economy food rationing

The Chinese Communist Party has taken away my opening line. A month or two ago, when I thought about how I'd start this blog, this seemed like the best way to begin: "If you're reading these words, you're not in China." (a nice, pithy start that I was extremely proud of.) At the time, the Chinese government blocked access to this website - it had done so for years, for reasons that were never entirely explained.
Channel: News Tags: china olympics beijing olympics james reynolds beijing

Perhaps we are a bit blase about Earth Day; certainly most of the Earth Day stuff in the mainstream media is old hat to TreeHugger readers. Other green sites are making a point of ignoring it completely, which is perhaps better than their crapping all over it last year. Perhaps Jasmin is right, that Earth Day is the New Christmas, and that Corporate America has co-opted and monetized it.
Channel: News Tags: earth day global warming environment sustainability
